A people’s organisation formed in 1992. Founder member and an active partner of Jana Mukti Morcha – a confederation of people’s organisations like Khedut Mazdoor Chetna Sangath, Narmada Bachao Andolan, Ekta Parishad and AMS. Also associated with state and national movements like Bharat Jan Andolan, Azadi Bachao Andolan and Tribal Network.

Focus

To fight against exploitative process represented by vested interests; preserve tribal culture and language; create an independent identity of tribal people; promote a people’s organisation on the basis of common issues and felt needs of people.

Addresses issues ranging from simple ones like drinking water facilities (provided to 134 villages in three blocks) and proper running of schools to land-related issues such as land patta, forest land, land mutation, corruption by the government officials (due to direct action, 97 people of three blocks have got back a total amount of Rs1.39 lakh given as bribes; four patwaris and four forest officials have been suspended) and exploitation by money-lenders (who have been forced to release jewellery and money totalling Rs67,000 to six people) and vested interests. Successfully pressurised the government to implement land-related policies through which1,679 people have benefited.

Programmes include village meetings -branches in over 100 villages; centrally organised morchas; training programmes; education centres for village children run by tribal students. Adivasi identity – raises the issue of socio-cultural identity of indigenous people in MP and India. Atrocities against tribal people – eight cases filed, of which two have been settled. In association with Kasturba Banawasi Kanyashram at Niwali – savings and credit programme for tribal-women covering 60 villages has raised Rs1.5 lakh; experiments with and popularises indigenous agricultural methods; provides legal aid to tribal people. The lawyers’ forum supports tribal people and provides information and guidance to tribal activists.
