Human Rights: Promoting individual human rights by empowering women is UNFPAs mandate. The agencys position is that any policy that dictates childbearing decisions is a violation of international human rights. UNFPA opposes coercion and, in fact, is a global leader in working to eliminate the use of coercive family planning practices.
Sovereignty: UNFPA programs are initiated at the request of host governments and recognize that implementation of health policies is the sovereign right of each country, consistent with national laws and development priorities, with full respect for the various religious and ethical values and cultural backgrounds of its people.
Reproductive Rights: UNFPA affirms its commitment to reproductive rights, gender equality and male responsibility, and to the autonomy and empowerment of women everywhere. It believes that safeguarding and promoting these rights, and promoting the well-being of children, especially girl children, are development goals in themselves. All couples and individuals have the right to decide freely and responsibly the number and spacing of their children as well as the right to information and the means to do so.
Abortion: UNFPA does not promote abortions. UNFPA works to prevent abortion and adheres to the United Nations stated policy that abortion should not be promoted as a method of family planning.
