The Association for Fire Ecology (AFE) is an organization of professionals dedicated to improving the knowledge and use of fire in land management. Fire is a critical ecological process in many ecosystems throughout the world. Land management goals often reflect plant communities with a past history of repeated fire events. Still, many landscapes suffer significantly altered fire regimes which may threaten native plant and animal assemblages.
AFE fills a critical gap in the distribution of fire science information. Utilizing annual conferences, an on line journal and selected publications, AFE continues to heighten awareness of the role of fire in contemporary ecosystems. It is the goal of AFE to assure fire applications and fire management actions are informed by sound science and the most innovative ecological thinking.
Our membership is diverse, including research scientists, working land managers, faculty, and students. The association strives to provide a linkage for fire practitioners across the country supporting the appropriate application of fire and fuels treatments.
