The SOS Hayle Web Site has been revived in urgent response to the current catastrophic and critical state of Hayle Beach and Dune System
SOS Hayle is Campaigning for the protection and preservation of Hayle Estuary, Beach, Harbour and Dunes and St Ives Bay Sand Cell. The objective of SOS Hayle is to bring an end to the permanent removal of sand as a method of maintaining a safe channel to the Harbour. As an alternative sustainable solution SOS Hayle strongly advocates the reintroduction of sluicing, the historical remedy for maintaining Hayle Harbour and a safe navigable channel without the loss of sand.
SOS is a local group dedicated to protecting Hayle Beach and Estuary so that the valuable plants and wildlife can be preserved and so that this unique landscape can be enjoyed by future generations. We believe that the commercial mining of sand from Hayle is having serous effects not only on the beach and surrounding dunes but on the whole of the shore of St Ives Bay.??????
Our aims are; ??to promote the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment of Hayle Estuary, Beach and Towans for public benefit and the protection and maintenance of the St Ives Bay coastal and marine environment.??To advance the education of the public in the natural and cultural history, conservation, environment and management of Hayle Estuary, Beach and Towans??One of our primary goals at the moment is to bring a permanent end to the commercial removal of sand from Hayle Beach and Estuary since we believe that the continued exploitation of this finite natural resource is having a serious impact on beach levels and the sustainability of the littoral, estuarine and dune environment leading to loss of landscape value and wildlife habitat.
We request; that all Relevant Authorities and Stakeholders, including Cornwall Council, Hayle Harbour Authority Ltd, Hayle Harbour Advisory Committee, Natural England, Environment Agency, Marine Management Organisation, RSPB, Towans Partnership, National Trust, St Ives Town Council and Hayle Town Council COMMIT TO PROTECTING AND PRESERVING THE BEACHES AND DUNES OF HAYLE AND ST IVES BAY BY SAYING NO TO ANY PERMANENT REMOVAL OF SAND FROM HAYLE ESTUARY AND BEACH AND ST IVES BAY and further THAT ALL PARTIES WORK TOGETHER TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION TO ACHIEVE A SAFE AND NAVIGABLE CHANNEL FOR HAYLE HARBOUR, SPECIFICALLY BY THE REVIVAL OF SLUICING, A NATURAL SYSTEM WHICH SERVED HAYLE AND ST IVES BAY SO WELL FROM 1788 TO THE 1970S.
